Open call for Ukrainian translators and translators into Ukrainian from Slovak

Are you interested in Slovak literature and would you like to learn more about the Slovak context, get to know authors, authors, publishers and improve your Slovak?

Malý Berlín cultural centre in Trnava offers a three-month residency for Ukrainian translators. The applicant will have the opportunity to get to know Slovak culture better and immerse himself/herself in its contexts, to get acquainted with authors, translators, publishers and to find the way to literary translation. Candidates may or may not have a pre-selected translation to work on during the residency. Genres to focus on during the residency are: prose (fiction only), poetry, drama – works by living authors.

What does the residency offer?

  • a stipend of 500 € per month (1500 € in total),
  • reimbursement of travel expenses up to € 200,
  • accommodation during the stay,
  • meetings with authors,
  • trips to literary museums,
  • meetings with translation experts,
  • meetings with publishers,
  • free admission to cultural centre events,
  • visits to literary events and festivals in Slovakia.

Expected outcomes of the residency:

  • active participation,
  • public presentation of their work and activities at the Ypsalon Literary Festival,
  • the text you will work on during the residency.

Selection criteria:

  • suitable for those who already have experience or are just interested in literary translation from Slovak into Ukrainian;
  • we are looking for professional translators, including students;
  • applicants must be fluent in Slovak language;
  • previous experience in translating fiction is not necessary, but may be an advantage,
  • during the residency we require work on the work of a living Slovak author.

Duration of residency:
Three months starting in September – exact date to be agreed.
