Residency in New York

Open call for curators and cultural managers.
Deadline: July 3rd 2023

Maly Berlin, in collaboration with the art organization Residency Unlimited, is organizing a pilot residency project in New York.

The residency will take place in October and November 2023 at Residency Unlimited, based in Brooklyn in a former church space that is now a multi-functional public event space. The residency is fully covered thanks to the financial support of the main partner, Slovak Art Council, the Consulate General of the Slovak Republic in New York and The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

Who are we looking for?

The open call is aimed at professionals living in Slovakia. The residency is intended for curators and other cultural professionals such as cultural managers, critics and researchers. For managers, experience in the field of visual arts is not necessary, but it can be an advantage.

Criteria for participant:

  • practicing curator/cultural manager with previous experience working with contemporary art and culture,
  • young or mid-career professionals,
  • fluent in English,
  • previous experience with international projects/exhibitions are not necessary but can be an advantage.

What does the residency offer?

  • scholarship of 1000 € per month (2000 € in total),
  • reimbursement of travel expenses up to 500 €,
  • accommodation during the residency, mentoring program in the art organization Residency Unlimited 
  • networking opportunities with the local art scene, curators, and venues,
  • the opportunity to present your work, activities and ideas to an international audience,
  • meetings with artists and culture professionals.

Expected outputs from the residency:

  • active participation in the Residency Unlimited program,
  • reports on a weekly basis,
  • public presentation of your work and activities as part of the Residency Unlimited public programme.

Residency Unlimited

Residency Unlimited (RU) is a non-profit art organization that supports the creation, presentation and dissemination of contemporary art through its unique residency program and year-round public programs.

RU is located within the former South Congregational Church in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The space is multifunctional, acting as a hub and meeting place for RU’s various communal activities, public programs, including talks, screenings, performances and exhibitions. Here artists and curators in residence meet with RU staff, conduct research, and at times produce work.

Residency Unlimited (RU) provides customized residencies for international and local artists and curators in New York City focused on network support, project/production assistance, and public exposure. This includes weekly meetings with art professionals aligning artistic and curatorial interests, regular project support with RU staff, and a public program opportunity  at the Brooklyn location or partnering venues throughout New York.
