Bahrain
architect, researcher, curator
date of residency: February – April 2024

Suha Hasan is the founder of the Stockholm-based architectural practice ASH. Her research focuses on the ambiguous histories, material conditions and environmental influences associated with the built environment, particularly archaeological sites and monuments. She has lectured and taught at universities in Bahrain, Egypt, Singapore, Sweden, Sudan and the UK. Suha is the founder of Mawane, a Bahrain-based urban research platform, and a founding member of the MSc (Modern Sudan) collective. Both platforms facilitate research and the sharing of its findings through public art exhibitions, talks and workshops. She is also the head of the AA Visiting School in Khartoum and has worked as a consultant for UNDP Sudan.

Objective of the residency:

During her residency, Suha Hasan explored modernist architecture in the context of climate change and the historical connection between Eastern Europe and the Arab region. She focused on the legacy of Brutalism, artistic connections to architecture and the social aspects of space. During her stay, she became familiar with local culture, archives and architectural projects, while her perception of Brutalism evolved under the influence of Slovak history and practice.
